Today, the Ruswin business is a far cry from its starting point – a small, two-man venture set up in Hammet Street, Currajong, Townsville by Ralph Rushton and his son Robert in 1972.

The mid 1990s saw the opening of Ruswin PNG and Mount Isa operations while Ruswin Indonesia opened its doors in the late 90s and Rockhampton a couple of years later. Recognition that locksmithing was more of a trade than a craft led to the business taking on apprentices who, after completing a four year mechanical engineer’s course, were awarded industry recognized Trade Certificates. Ruswin have successfully trained over 100 apprentices, many of whom have attained the top level qualification of master locksmith.

The Ruswin Group currently employs around 150 people. During 2011 Nikki Bornis, was awarded the Australia and New Zealand Apprentice of the Year award. She was also voted the 2012 Australian Locksmith of the Year and these days leads Ruswin’s locksmith training division. Just recently, Ruswin again was recognised for its outstanding commitment to training when Luke Bergin was awarded the prestigious 2015 Australian Locksmith of the Year award.

Over the years the Ruswin operation has progressed from a business specializing in general locksmithing through to complete systems integration embracing all digital electronic security products and their applications. Ruswin’s current company structure comprises mechanical security, electronic security, alarm monitoring, pre-employment screening and retail stores.

  • Mechanical security covers locksmithing, master key systems and everything associated with the installation and service of locks and hardware equipment.
  • Electronic security is the domain of security systems (alarms), access control (swipe cards ), CCTV (security cameras and image recording), electronic gates and biometric security (the use of unique human characteristics such as finger prints as irrefutable proof of identity)
  • Alarm monitoring through a control room and the provision of response on alarm activations, provides heightened security measures for residential and commercial property.
  • Pre-employment screening includes a national police records check, (under consent) of individuals’ criminal records as part of general recruitment and more particularly, in professions such as aged care and finance.  Providing a potential new employer with a national police records check can also give an applicant’s resume the edge over others.

Our retail stores, located in Mount Isa and Townsville provide clients with a wide variety of security products including padlocks, designer keys, key tags, personal alarms, door hardware and furniture. Police Record Checks can also be completed over the counter – no appointment required. On the spot key cutting services available too.

Australian Apprentice Locksmith of the Year 2015

During the Master Locksmith Association of Australia Conference held on the Sunshine Coast, Luke Bergin was awarded the Australian Locksmith Apprentice of the Year for 2015. The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) is an independent professional body which is recognised and respected as the peak organisation for locksmithing professionals in the Pacific region. The MLA provides a wide range of locksmithing and security services throughout Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific region and South East Asia.

Luke began as a school based work experience student with Ruswin during 2010. Based on his enthusiasm for the trade, he was offered a part time position working Saturdays and school holidays. He commenced his apprenticeship with Ruswin in early 2012. A passionate and dedicated employee Luke spent many hours reviewing and practicing his locksmithing skills. Countless late nights and additional weekend work resulted in Luke achieving the highest achievement in his field. With just 6 points between the top 3 apprentices, 4 points separated Luke and the second place getter.

During the Gala Dinner presentation, Luke spoke of his honor and surprise at winning such an award. He thanked the wonderful Tradesmen and Tradeswomen that he has learnt his skills off. He acknowledged that it was their assistance that has helped him achieve what he has today. Luke is rewarded with a trip to Europe. He will visit the Silca Factory in Italy and the Abus Factory in Germany.

Ruswin's continued dedication and development within the security industry has once again been recognised with this being the second Apprentice of the Year award received by a Ruswin employee in recent years.
